A New Year

Written by Ellie Steltz on 1/29/19

I know the “new year” is in full swing by now, and January is almost over… But I wanted to take a moment to share some of my thoughts and goals for 2019 along with some musings from 2018. As 2018 came to an end, I went through the classic evaluation of the year. 2018 held many big moments for Misc. Delights. My sales more than quadrupled compared to my first year in business (what?!) as I took on new projects (like my first wedding sign order!), got my products into a few local shops and attended some awesome festivals and craft fairs. I had projects ranging from custom logos to wedding signs to gift cards and more. It was such a blast! But I found myself running from one thing to the next. I was frazzled a large percent of the time in 2018. I often felt overwhelmed by the next new project I had committed to. With business things along with other stuff in my life, I was forever thinking I didn’t feel I had “space” in my brain to even pause to think or spend time dwelling on God’s word or pray for my loved ones or simply stop thinking. So all of this is to say that I had to really pause and think about what I wanted 2019 to look like. I believe 2018 was a beautiful year of growth for me in so many ways, I simply feel myself needing a change for 2019.

The best way I can describe my goal for 2019 is to create space. Space in my home and office, free of literal clutter (thanks Marie Kondo for helping us get on track with that! #itsparksjoy). Space in my heart to be able to soak up time with God. Space in my brain to be able to learn more and create meaningful products. Space in my social life to prioritize building friendships and meaningful connections. One of the most practical things I’m doing to implement this is to read every day. This has added so much richness to my life already. I’m currently reading two books: Finding Spiritual Whitespace by Bonnie Gray and 168 Hours by Laura Vanderkam. I highly recommend both. They have been so helpful in my journey to create space for what I want to prioritize.

What I want to leave you with is this:

Life can (and will) get crazy at times and you will get frazzled. You are not alone! Remember that everyone you see in those Instagram squares deals with hard life stuff too. But take a moment to pause. Is there anything that you have been wanting to change but haven’t had the time or motivation to? Write it down. Identify it. Now write down one small thing you can do now, or start adding to your daily routine that will help you work towards bettering that little part of your life (like reading every day for me). I have already had days (and weeks it seems) where I have felt like I was slipping back into my frazzled state. I’m trying to have grace for myself and you need to have grace for yourself too. You are freaking awesome, no matter what you accomplish in your life!

Take some time this week to rest and refresh. Remember that you are enough,
no matter what you've checked off your list today.

All my love,

Ellie

Let's stay connected!
